BOTOX COSMETIC®

What is BOTOX Cosmetic®?

BOTOX Cosmetic® is a special type of protein (Botulism) that can bind to muscles in a specific way that prevents the release of another chemical (acetylcholine). The resultant effect is a temporary relaxation of the affected muscles.
BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is a treatment of dynamic wrinkles, that is wrinkles caused by repeated movements.

Commonly treated areas include:

  • The lines around the eyes known as crows feet caused by squinting or smiling.
  • Corners of the brows to create a brow lift and open up the eye.
  • The horizontal lines across the forehead caused by raising the eyebrows.
  • The lines & folding of skin between the eyebrows caused by frowning.
  • The lines on the sides of the nose called "bunny lines".

Other beneficial areas include:

  • The corners of the mouth to reduce the downward turn of lips.
  • The chin to reduce the dimpling effect that occurs with age.
  • The masseters (jaw muscles) to reduce the overly angular jaw of some women.
  • The neck lines and muscles to regain the jaw neck definition.

Is it Safe?

Yes! BOTOX® has a long and well established safety profile. While you may only know Botox as a wrinkle treatment, but it has actually been available for over 20 years, and has been used to treat many medical diseases. Over 17 millions of people have been treated with BOTOX® for medical and cosmetic purposes in North America alone.

In fact, it is used in children as young as 2 years old who have cerebral palsy. These children receive over 10 times the amount used for Cosmetic treatment EVERY 3 MONTHS!

This safety has been proven repeatedly over the past 20 years through extensive testing and research. There have been over 3000 publications on Botulism Toxin Type A in scientific and medical journals and there is extensive data on the long-term safety of BOTOX® for the treatment of various conditions.

To put this all in perspective - the risks and side effects are MUCH LESS than Tylenol.

BOTOX Cosmetic® is an approved prescription drug and is approved by both the FDA as well as the Health Protection Branch in Canada. BOTOX® should always be administered by a licensed, qualified and experienced physician in an appropriate medical setting.

Will it give me food poisoning / Is it botulism?

No, it is not toxic to you - nor is it poisonous to you.
BOTOX Cosmetic® is NOT botulism and it will not cause food poisoning. To clarify, Botulism is the name of an illness not the name of the active drug.

The product is a purified protein which is extracted from naturally occurring bacteria and then rigorously processed under strict pharmaceutical manufacturing guidelines. The finished result is a safe medical product.

It is very similar to how Penicillin comes from mould.
It is an approved drug that is used in VERY tiny doses.

How do I know it won't be toxic to me?

Typically, for a cosmetic treatment, you may receive up to a maximum of 100 units.
To make someone remotely sick, you would have to receive OVER 35 times this dose all at once which would NEVER happen.
You are more likely to "poison" yourself with Tylenol ( if you took the whole bottle at once! ) than to ever remotely hurt yourself with BOTOX Cosmetic®
You are getting therapeutically proven VERY TINY doses.

How does it work?

BOTOX Cosmetic® works by simply relaxing the muscles underneath the skin to create a smooth and refreshed appearance.

How long does the procedure take?

Generally, after the consultation, and for repeat patients, the procedure only takes 10 minutes. Since there is no downtime, you can do it on your lunchtime, and no one would know you have had it done! Dr. Tosoni makes every effort to accommodate for same day booking for Botox® treatments.

How quickly does it work?

It can take UP TO 2 weeks for it to take full effect. Usually we ask patients to wait for the 14 days to pass in order to fully see the results.

How is it done?

It is injected with a very delicate insulin type needle, much smaller than those used to take your blood.

Does it hurt?

No, BOTOX Cosmetic® treatment is quick and simple. A very fine needle and small amount of liquid is used so the pain associated with the injection is minimal. Most patients say the injections feel similar to a little pinch. No sedation or local anesthetic is required. You can resume your normal activities immediately.

How long does BOTOX Cosmetic® last? Is it Permanent?

No, BOTOX Cosmetic® is not permanent. It lasts between 3-4 months on average.
If you follow Dr. Tosoni's directions to have your first 3 treatments promptly every 3 to 4 months (without waiting in between) you can almost always expect that your next treatments will start to last longer than 4 months.

Is it going to be worse when it wears off?

No. Your face will never get worse if you stop using BOTOX Cosmetic® or when it wears off.
BOTOX Cosmetic® " stops / slows " the clock of aging.
When you stop getting treatments, the " aging clock " resumes like normal.
At the very minimum, you will simply return to where you started.
If you use BOTOX Cosmetic® for a number of years and then stop - your muscles learn to relax and therefore, you will end up looking a little better than when you originally started.

How much does it cost?

The cost of BOTOX cosmetic® treatment varies for each patient as their needs are different and only after a personal consultation with Dr. Caroline Tosoni can we give you a specific cost.

A BOTOX® treatment will vary depending on the amount of product needed to achieve optimal results and the areas on the face that are being treated.

As an example, for a typical female who is interested in having her frown lines treated, the cost would typically vary between $300 and $450. Since the positive effects of the treatment can last up to four months, the cost to you is less than a latte a day!

I don't want to look like a mask without expression, will Botox result in loss of facial expression?

No. Botox® is intended to enhance the way you look, not change it. Dr. Tosoni ensures you get the look you want , as natural as you want. You will still be able to smile, frown, raise your brows, animate.

Most people simply want to look NATURAL, RELAXED and REFRESHED, without looking " done ".

In the experienced hands of Dr. Tosoni, patients typically say that no one knows that they had anything done. Friends simply say that they look well rested and great!

According to a survey of approximately 1000 patients conducted by the research arm of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 97% of patients were definitively satisfied with BOTOX Cosmetic® treatments.

Also, it is important to know that Botox® has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are RARE and are NOT PERMANENT.
Rarely, there can be some minor bruising (which is easily covered up with makeup) or a slight short term headache. Most patients do not experience any side effects at all

I have heard that you can get a drooping eyelid, is this true?

The incidence of these side effects is less than 1% and would last from only a few days to a few weeks.
Most patients do not experience any side effects at all. In the event that it would occur, a prescription eye drops can reduce this significantly.

Where does it go in my body?

BOTOX Cosmetic® stays local to the muscle where it was injected.
After the injection, BOTOX Cosmetic® is simply metabolised & broken down into natural byproducts within a few hours.

I am pregnant / am currently breast feeding, can I get BOTOX Cosmetic®?

No. It is recommended that you wait until you are finished breast feeding to have your BOTOX Cosmetic® done.
