Dr. Caroline Tosoni is a premier provider of Fraxel skin resurfacing. Fraxel can improve many cosmetic issues including fine lines, acne scars and age spots.

What is the Fraxel re:store Dual Laser System?

The Fraxel re:store Dual laser system is an innovative, non-ablative, fractionated resurfacing laser.

It is the original and most widely adopted fractionated laser system. It is considered the gold standard for non-ablative fractional skin resurfacing to which other fractionated lasers are compared to in clinical studies.

Non-ablative means that it does not remove a full layer of skin like the old C02 resurfacing lasers used to do. It is a much more comfortable procedure than older technologies and has much less downtime or side effects associated with it.

Fractionated means that only a fraction or percentage of the skin is treated at each session. Precise skin damage to millions of microscopic areas, separated by healthy skin, allows for minimal healing time and very effective collagen rejuvenation.

Dual means that it has the ability to target both deep wrinkles, lines, dilated pores, acne scars and stretch marks with a 1550 wavelength laser as well as superficial fine lines, brown sun spots, age spots and precancerous skin lesions with a 1927 wavelength laser.

The Fraxel re:store Dual laser is effective and safe. It delivers dramatic and predictable results for all skin types on and off the face (neck, chest, hands) -with minimal disruption to the client's daily routine.

What skin conditions can the Fraxel re:store Dual treat?

The Fraxel re:store Dual laser has FDA clearance for treatment of the following skin conditions:

  • Wrinkles around the eyes (peri-orbital wrinkles)
  • Pigmented lesions: Age Spots / Sun spots /Brown Spots
  • Brown Spot / Pregnancy mask/ Melasma

How can the Fraxel re:store Dual laser work such wonders?

The technology behind the Fraxel re:store Dual Laser System is as revolutionary as the results it can deliver. Unlike other laser treatments, the Fraxel re:store Dual laser precisely treats thousands of microscopic areas of the skin, using pinpoint laser beams that penetrate beneath the skin's surface to eliminate old, damaged skin cells. Fraxel re:store Dual uses the latest in skin care technology to stimulate the body's own natural healing process which in turn replaces damaged tissue with new collagen and fresh, glowing, healthy skin. The process of Fraxel's controlled skin damage to millions of microscopic areas, separated by healthy skin, allows for minimal healing time and very effective skin rejuvenation.

What should I expect during my Fraxel Dual treatment visit?

At her Ottawa medical clinic, Dr. Tosoni takes every precaution to ensure your treatment experience is as pleasant as possible.

You will be asked to arrive one hour and 30 minutes prior to your appointment.

Pre treatment pictures will be taken prior to your first Fraxel Dual treatment.

Then a numbing topical cream will be applied to the area being treated for about 1 hour and 15 minutes. This is a much stronger topical anesthetic than those found over the counter at a pharmacy and will make your Fraxel re:store Dual laser treatment very comfortable.

During this hour you can read, sleep wrapped under a warm blanket or enjoy a pedicure or manicure by one of our skilled aestheticians. Manicures and pedicures have to be requested ahead of time for booking purposes.

Once your skin is ready to receive the treatment, the numbing cream will be removed and the treatment will start.

The actual Fraxel treatment will take about 20-30 minutes for single areas (face, neck, chest , back or hands), 30-50 minutes if you combine 2 or more areas. Cold air will be blown on your skin during the Fraxel treatment making it even more comfortable.

Your eyes will be protected by laser shields for the entire duration of the treatment.

The feeling experienced during the Fraxel can be described as a fine grating feeling. It is not painful. Immediately after, your skin will feel as if you have a sunburn.

A cold mask will be applied to your face immediately after your treatment.

Sunscreen or mild hydrocortisone cream might be applied.

After answering your questions and reviewing after care, you will be sent home with post treatment instructions.

What should I expect after my Fraxel re:store Dual treatment?

Immediately after your treatment, your skin will feel very similar to when you have a sun burn. It will be red and feel warm and tingling.

The effects of the numbing cream will gradually dissipate over the next hours. This will help prevent any immediate post treatment discomfort.

There will be no oozing, no scabbing, no bleeding, no burns or peeling of the skin.

You may experience some swelling around the eyes and face for 1-2 days. It is recommended that a special mask containing aloe vera, vitamin E and green tea, be applied to your skin 10 minutes every hour on the day of your treatment. This specialized mask is available at Dr. Tosoni's Ottawa medical clinic.

We recommend that you sleep with an extra pillow the first two nights after your treatment to diminish swelling around the eyes, which is seen especially first thing in the morning.

You may take an anti-histamine such as Reactine or Claritin, as well as an anti-inflammatory such as Advil or Motrin on the day of the treatment and for the next 3 days. This will also help reduce any post treatment swelling.

For those patients receiving a series of Fraxel Dual treatment targeting more deeper skin issues (acne scars, surgical scars, wrinkles, pores, stretch marks) and using the1550 wavelength laser beam, they will find that their skin will look bronzed, feel dry and sand paper-like to the touch between days 4-10 post treatment. This is normal and temporary. It is as a result of all the micro thermal zones of injury (the old skin) that are being pushed outward to the surface of the skin during the healing process. Do not rub or exfoliate your skin. Simply keep your skin well hydrated. Avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen regularly.

For those receiving a single or two treatments of Fraxel Dual using the 1927 wavelength to address more superficial skin imperfections like brown discoloration and pre cancerous actinic keratosis, the skin will look like they had a sun burn on day 1 post treatment, bronzed on day 2 and on day 3 and 4 post treatment, their old skin will shed, leaving a healthier, brighter, radiant looking skin by day 6!

When will I see results from my Fraxel re:store Dual treatment?

As just mentioned, when treating brown discoloration or pre-cancerous actinic lesions with the 1927 wavelength laser beam, you will see up to 70% improvement in one short week after only one treatment.

When treating lines, pores, wrinkles, scars, you can expect two levels of results, immediate and progressive.

Immediately after the initial healing is complete, the surface of your skin will feel softer, look brighter and the tone will start to become more even. There should be a 15-20% improvement in your skin with each treatment but the effects of each treatment are cumulative.

Progressive results occur over the next 3-6 months as the deeper layers of the skin continue to heal.

3- 5 treatments are typically recommended for anti-aging goals and 6 treatments for acne scar, surgical scars and stretch marks. Treatments are done 4-8 weeks apart.

The final and best results are seen 6 months after your last treatment.

How long will the results of my Fraxel re:store Dual treatment last?

The results will last for years. Having said this, we can't stop the passage of time. Therefore, if the Fraxel re:store Dual treatment is performed for anti-aging purposes, it is recommended that a single maintenance treatment be done every 6-12 months. In cases of acne or surgical scarring, the results obtained are permanent, however, as the patient ages and the skin looses some of it's elasticity, it may be necessary to have 1 or 2 extra treatments done later.
