Dermal Fillers and Collagen

Understanding the basis of the aging process

As we mature, a combination of factors can result in the loss of our youthful look. Understanding this concept is an important first step in realizing why dermal fillers have become such a useful tool in medical aesthetics.

Facial shape, aging, genetics and certain life style choices such as smoking, prolonged sun exposure, excessive exercise and exposure to pollution all play a role on how one will age. Together, these factors result in diminished collagen, hyaluronic acid and fat production, decreased skin elasticity, decreased natural skin oiliness, reduced skin moisture retention and suppleness. As we continue to age, the bony skeleton shrinks resulting in less support for the overlying soft tissue and muscles. The end results can be dramatic and include depressed temples, sunken eyes, droopier eyebrows, deeper tear trough, flatter cheeks, deep lines along the sides of the nose (laugh lines), thinner lips and a heavier jaw line. These changes make us look older, tired, drawn and angry even if we are not. The process of volume loss can start as early as 30 years old and although some individuals are blessed with better genetics than others, eventually all of us will experience these changes.

How can I restore the volume loss?

Fortunately, safe dermal fillers are now available to restore volume loss and recreate more aesthetically pleasing facial contouring. A dermal fillers is an injectable gel made of synthetic hyaluronic acid, a substance made from sugar molecules. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in our body and primarily responsible for adding volume and hydration to the skin. It is transparent, has a smooth consistency and can provide a strikingly natural look and feel when injected by an experienced physician injector.

Dr. Caroline Tosoni only uses dermal fillers with a longstanding tract records for safety and efficacy. She uses Juvederm Ultra, Juvederm Ultra Plus, Juvederm Voluma, Restylane Fine lines, Restylane and Perlane.

What areas can be treated with dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers be injected in following places:
  • The lips for fullness or along the lip lines to erase the small vertical lines where the lipsticks bleeds (smoker's lines or bar code lines)
  • Between the eyes to erase the frown lines (best results are usually achieved in this area in combination with Botox injections)
  • The tear trough to diminish sunken eyes appearance
  • The temporal hollow which can make one look emaciated or unhealthy
  • The cheeks to recreate a lift and remove the drawn and tired look
  • The lines on the side of the nose (parenthesis, laugh lines) and smile lines on the side of the face
  • Around the mouth, chin and jaw line to recreate facial contouring
  • The earlobes to give back support to earrings
  • The hands to diminish the appearance of the veins and restore volume

When will I see results and how long do the results last?

Results with dermal filler injections are immediate, natural and amazing. Treatments are tailored to your specific needs. Dr. Tosoni can treat an isolated area such as the lips or she can adopt a more global approach to the face where several areas can be corrected in one session thus creating the effects of a mini face lift, without the cost, downtime or side-effects of a surgical procedure. With dermal fillers treatments recovery and downtime are negligible. Side effects are usually minimal such as bruising, redness, tenderness and swelling. Supplemental "touch-up" treatments may be required after one or two weeks once the product has settled.

The results will typically last 6-12 months with most Dermal fillers except for Voluma which typically lasts 12-18 months. Factors such as where the Dermal fillers is injected in the face, how much product is used, if the patients has had prior Dermal fillers treatment in the same area, if the individual is a smoker or exercises regularly are all example of factors which may affect the duration of the treatment.

Are the Dermal fillers injections painful?

Dr. Tosoni takes all the precautions necessary to make your experience comfortable. The dermal fillers are injected with a very fine needle. Ice is typically applied to the skin prior to the injections. These simple steps help numb the pain receptors so that injections are not felt. Also, most of the Dermal fillers contain Lidocaine 0.3%, a mild local anesthetic, which makes the injections very comfortable. Finally, Dr. Tosoni is extremely conscientious, takes her time and injects slowly which all contribute to a more comfortable experience.
